Secondary Art Education

My approach to secondary art education is all about choice and student lead discovery. The main goal is for students to expand their knowledge art history, materials, processes, and contemporary artists of all backgrounds. Their own artwork is on their own terms- allowing them to face all problems with creative problem-solving.

Below is some lesson plans I have curated:

  • Value Scales

    Color theory and paint exploration.

  • Identity Portraits

While learning about the idea of a non-traditional self-portrait, students create a portrait of items that they feel best represent who they are!

  • Pinch Pot Monsters

Playing with clay and craft arts.

  • Elements and Principles

Create a cheat sheet to remember what each of the Elements and Principles of Art and Design are!

  • Vanitas Still Life

While exploring the element of value, students learn about the rich history of still life and create a vanitas-style still life with only pencils.

  • Alebrijes

Exploring the elements of texture and form, students learn about the Mexican Folk Art of Alebrijes learning to create their own entirely out of paper.

  • Ceramic Boxes

Playing with clay and crafts arts.

  • Graffiti Tags

While learning about various Philly namesakes (Like Corn Bread) in the mural arts and the public art world- students create personalized Graffiti name tags that explore the element of line.

  • Monochromatic Still Lives

Exploring the history of the Still Life and exploring paint further.

  • Abstract Emotion Paintings

While exploring the world of abstract art, students learn about color theory and how to break down large concepts into basic shapes with acrylic paint.
